Adobe to Open Source Flex

Here‘s the announcement that Adobe is intending to release Flex as Open Source.

Extract:

Adobe is announcing plans to open source Flex under the Mozilla Public License (MPL). This includes not only the source to the ActionScript components from the Flex SDK, which have been available in source code form with the SDK since Flex 2 was released, but also includes the Java source code for the ActionScript and MXML compilers, the ActionScript debugger and the core ActionScript libraries from the SDK. The Flex SDK includes all of the components needed to create Flex applications that run in any browser – on Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux and on now on the desktop using “Apollo”.

Developers can use the Flex SDK to freely develop and deploy Flex applications using either Adobe Flex Builder or an IDE of their choice.

In other news, “Open Source” is now also a verb…

open source has been a verb for about 8 years.

The term was invented so that business people could have a vocabulary to talk about free software. And in the business world, there is no distinction between nouns and verbs.

The other day I was a talk by an entrepreneur who was talking about open sourcing your software. I tried to imagine what it would be like if he’d had to use some other term, such as ‘freeing’ your software. The image was so comical that i nearly burst out laughing, and it suddenly became clear to me how a word can change the world.

It still remain completely proprietary as long as the Flash player stays proprietary. Don’t get mistaken it is a decoy, a trap that a lot of people might fall into.

É uma estratégia dela para que divulgar o Flex provavelmente. Nada melhor do que abrir o código das linguagens para que comecem a surgir ports pra todo lado, e os próprios programadores possam extender a plataforma. Fica mais fácil competir também, tecnologias abertas, principalmente para web, são a regra e não a exceção.

    Vide Java. ;)

“Open Source” is not a verb. “Open-Source”. Otherwise, one could say “Open the source to/for”, or preferably, “Free the source for/to”.
